Iran escalates crackdown on political prisoners and teachers

The Iranian government is intensifying a crackdown on political dissent, targeting activists, political prisoners, and educators. Reports indicate a pattern of arbitrary detention, enforced disappearances, and violent prison raids used to suppress resistance and supporters of the PMOI/MEK.

Between May and July 2026, at least 11 individuals were arrested and remain held incommunicado without reliable information regarding their location or well-being. These detainees, including students and professionals, have reportedly been denied access to legal counsel and family members.

Simultaneously, the regime has targeted the teaching profession following protests in January 2026. The Center for Human Rights in Iran reports that at least 60 teachers and union activists have been arrested, imprisoned, or subjected to judicial rulings through July 28. Many face vague national security charges, such as "propaganda against the regime," and have received sentences including lengthy prison terms, flogging, and internal exile.
