Iran executes Alireza Sepahi hours after telephone marriage

Alireza Sepahi, a 25-year-old Iranian man, was executed by hanging in Isfahan following his involvement in protests earlier this year. In the hours preceding his death, Sepahi married his partner, Mahshad Kashani, via telephone while both were in detention.

Sepahi and 21-year-old Alireza Raissi were convicted of belonging to an armed group and endangering national security following a protest at Alikhani Square on January 8. Authorities stated that four police officers died during the incident. Human rights organizations, including the Abdorrahman Boroumand Center, have criticized the case, citing “grave procedural flaws” and the dismissal of defense evidence.

Reports indicate that Sepahi’s execution had been previously delayed after he suffered a heart attack and was hospitalized. Following the execution, Kashani, who is serving a five-year sentence, has reportedly faced intense interrogation and pressure from prison officials to deny that the marriage ever took place. Iran Human Rights reports that 34 individuals arrested during the January protests have since been executed.
