UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that Iran has carried out at least 56 executions on national‑security related charges since 19 March, including 27 linked to the anti‑government protests that began earlier this year. He said more than 100 other detainees face the risk of execution on similar charges and that executions for drug‑related offences continue at an alarming rate. Türk criticised the lack of fair‑trial guarantees, noting that many confessions were obtained under torture, that some death sentences were handed down after brief three‑hour closed‑door hearings, and that public executions have been reported.

The UN urged Tehran to halt all executions immediately and to move toward abolition of the death penalty. In July 2026, human‑rights monitors recorded a further surge, documenting at least 77 executions in a single month, among them political prisoners and members of ethnic minorities, underscoring the ongoing crackdown.
