Iran executes foreign national over deaths of four police officers
Iran has executed a foreign national, Ghaem Hosseini, for his involvement in an incident during the January anti-government protests that resulted in the deaths of four police officers. The execution took place on Thursday following a review and confirmation of the sentence by the Supreme Court.
According to the Mizan Online judicial website, Hosseini was convicted of drawing a weapon, spreading fear and terror, creating widespread insecurity, and threatening national security and public order. The incident occurred in the central province of Isfahan. Four other individuals have already been executed in connection with this same case since July.
Human rights organizations, including Iran Human Rights, report that Iran carried out at least 1,639 executions last year, marking the highest number since 1989. The authorities noted that the frequency of death penalties has increased following the escalation of conflict in the Middle East.
