Iran executes two Islamic State militants after death sentences upheld

Iranian courts carried out death sentences on two members of the Islamic State, identified as Mohieddin Abdollahi and Hossein Palani. Both were convicted of armed rebellion against the Islamic Republic after a security operation dismantled their cell, which had been re‑formed following the group’s defeat in Iraq and Syria and was planning attacks inside Iran. The Supreme Court confirmed the sentences, and the executions were carried out shortly thereafter.

The security crackdown that uncovered the cell took place in the Bamo mountains near the Iraqi border, resulting in the killing of several militants and the arrest of others, as well as the seizure of weapons, ammunition and related equipment. During the operation three members of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard were also killed.
