Iran executes Kurdish protesters and former protest leader

Iran carried out a series of executions targeting participants in the January protests. Two Kurdish demonstrators, Mehrdad Mohammadinia and Ashkan Maleki, were executed in Karaj after being sentenced by judge Abolghasem Salavati, who has a reputation for harsh rulings. In a separate case, Abbas Akbari Feizabadi, identified by Iranian authorities as a leading figure in the Nain protests, was hanged after being convicted of "waging war against God" and other security‑related offenses.

Human‑rights organisations have condemned both executions, noting a lack of fair trial standards, reports of coerced confessions, and the use of the death penalty as a tool of intimidation to suppress dissent.

The actions are part of a broader crackdown on civil opposition within Iran, drawing criticism from international bodies and opposition groups that call for UN intervention.
