Iran Executes Man Convicted of Spying for Israel

Iran carried out the execution of 32‑year‑old Ehşan Afrašteč, who had been convicted of espionage for Israeli intelligence. He was arrested in 2024 and sentenced to death in 2025 on what human‑rights groups say were fabricated testimonies. The Supreme Court confirmed the verdict, and the man was beheaded on Wednesday. According to the state news agency Mizan, “Ehşan Afrašteč, a spy trained by Mossad in Nepal who sold sensitive information to Israel, was executed.”

The execution follows a recent rise in spy‑case sentences after the February 28 Israeli‑American strikes against Iran, and comes shortly after Tehran announced the execution of an aerospace engineering student suspected of spying for Israel and the United States. Human‑rights organizations note that Iran ranks second only to China in the frequency of capital punishment.
