Iran issues death sentences for 16 protesters in Isfahan
Iran is seeing a surge in capital punishment and heavy prison sentences following recent unrest. In Isfahan, sixteen political defendants were sentenced to death and a combined 215 years of discretionary imprisonment. Ten of these individuals, linked to the 'Isfahan Martyrs Square' case, received death sentences for the charge of 'moharebeh'.
In a separate case, the Supreme Court confirmed the death sentence of 26-year-old Alisghar Peyghambari. His lawyer, Payam Dorfashan, stated the sentence was based on charges of espionage and cooperation with Israel, though the defense maintains his involvement was limited to participating in protests.
Additionally, reports indicate that at least six executions were carried out in Rasht and Tabriz prisons involving drug-related and murder charges. In Tehran, two individuals were sentenced to death following a 'qasamah' ceremony, a religious procedure involving the oaths of the victim's relatives, following a fatal group altercation.
