Iran executes two protesters in Isfahan amid human rights concerns

Iranian authorities executed two young protesters, Alireza Raisi, 21, and Alireza Sepahi, 25, on October 5 at the Dastgerd prison and Shahid Alikhani Square in Isfahan. The executions followed proceedings that human rights organizations have denounced as sham trials involving torture and forced confessions.

Alireza Sepahi was married to his partner, Mahshad Kashani, via a telephone ceremony just hours before his death. The couple was held in separate prisons, and authorities denied them a physical meeting. Sepahi had been arrested during January protests and was accused of involvement in the deaths of four security force members, charges which he and his lawyers denied.

Alireza Raisi’s final moments were captured in an audio recording of a phone call with his father. In the recording, Raisi attempted to comfort his weeping father, telling him, “Don’t cry, dad,” and expressing pride in him. Raisi had also vowed to look after his cousin, Ramin Raisi, who was killed during the same period of unrest.

Human rights groups and journalists have criticized the speed and brutality of the judicial process. Reports indicate that families were prevented from burying the deceased in their hometowns, with Raisi’s father reportedly being taken to a secret burial site.
