Iran execution rates increase by 29 percent in annual report
A report released by the Human Rights Activists News Agency (HRANA) indicates a significant increase in executions in Iran. Between October 10, 2025, and October 8, 2026, at least 2,003 executions were recorded, representing a 29 percent increase compared to the previous period. The report notes that an execution occurs on average every 4.35 hours.
Of those executed, 57.56 percent were convicted of murder and 36.25 percent for drug-related offenses. The data also highlights the execution of 47 women and 4 child offenders. Additionally, 69 individuals were executed on political or security-related charges.
Coinciding with World Day Against the Death Penalty, observers have noted a trend of organized executions of political prisoners and protesters. Recent cases include Alireza Sepahi, who was executed shortly after a telephone marriage ceremony with his partner, Mahshad Kashani, following their arrests during protests in Isfahan.
