Iran faces daily gasoline deficit of 14 million liters

Iran is facing a significant gasoline shortage and consumption imbalance. Official data from the Ministry of Petroleum shows that between August 3 and August 7 (12 to 16 Mordad), the country consumed approximately 668 million liters of gasoline, averaging over 133 million liters per day.

Soghab Esfahani, head of the Organization for Optimization and Strategic Management of Energy, reported that daily consumption averages around 135 million liters. However, domestic refineries produce only 112 million liters per day, and an additional 9 million liters are supplied through petrochemical conversions. Despite these efforts, a daily deficit of approximately 14 million liters remains.

Esfahani noted that optimal consumption for a country of Iran's size and population should be between 50 and 70 million liters per day. He attributed the high consumption to inefficient domestic vehicles, stating that much of the fuel is wasted due to poor engine quality. He proposed three potential scenarios to manage the crisis: limiting supply to daily production levels, distributing fuel based on quotas with non-subsidized rates for excess use, or prioritizing public transportation.
