Iran gasoline supply constraints

Iran’s gasoline market is tightening after a series of attacks on key energy facilities, including the South Pars gas field, Lavan refinery and Tehran refinery, reduced refining capacity and threatened stable fuel availability. Officials urged consumers to cut unnecessary travel, shift to public transport, walk, cycle or use CNG‑powered vehicles, and warned that, if demand remained high during the peak summer months, additional consumption‑limiting measures such as quotas or higher price tiers might be introduced.

Within hours, the shortfall became quantifiable: daily domestic consumption outpaced refinery output by roughly 20 million liters, creating a gap that imports could not fill because regional and international sanctions, compounded by the Ukraine war’s disruption of Russian oil shipments, made fuel imports “almost impossible.” The government is now reviewing gasoline allocation and pricing policies, and may shift more of the financing burden onto consumers while seeking ways to curb demand.
