Iran faces economic instability and energy shortages
Iran is facing significant economic and energy challenges characterized by widespread electricity shortages and severe financial instability. To address energy needs, the government recently connected the 5.4-megawatt Meshginshahr geothermal plant on Mount Sabalan to the national grid, a project that faced a quarter-century of delays due to technical difficulties and international sanctions.
While geothermal energy offers stable power potential, experts note that many of Iran's identified resources may lack the high heat content required for efficient electricity production. Furthermore, the high upfront capital risks of geothermal projects contrast with the rapid deployment and decreasing costs of solar and wind energy.
Broadly, the Iranian economy is experiencing high inflation, estimated at 53%, and a contracting GDP. Economic strain is attributed to the combination of conflict-related infrastructure damage, a significant drop in oil output following a U.S. blockade, and the impact of sanctions. These factors have contributed to rising poverty, food shortages, and reduced purchasing power for citizens.
