Iran electricity grid crisis deepens
Overview
The shortage that began in July 2024 continues to worsen. Repeated U.S. air strikes and a severe heatwave have further weakened the grid, with the national electricity company reporting a loss of roughly 4,200 MW and damage to more than 2,000 transmission points, including a power plant on Kish Island and distribution networks in Bandar Abbas, Jask and Chahbahar.
Daily rolling blackouts now affect households and businesses nationwide. Students at Sharif University of Technology report cancelled exams and classes, while hospitals rely on noisy portable generators to keep ventilators running. Small retailers use generators to preserve perishable goods.
Officials urge residents of the southern provinces—Bandar Abbas, Bushehr, Qeshm Island and nearby areas—to switch off air‑conditioners for an hour during peak periods. Tehran officials attribute the recent grid damage to bombings of electrical facilities.
The energy crisis unfolds amid heightened regional tension. Israel reported missile launches toward Jordan’s Red Sea city of Aqaba, and new reports indicate Iran launched missiles toward the same city. Attacks on power and desalination facilities have also hit Kuwait and Bahrain. The Arab League warned that the escalating U.S.–Iran confrontation could deepen instability across the Middle East.
