Iran faces extreme heatwaves and severe air pollution
Iran is experiencing extreme environmental conditions, characterized by severe air pollution in some regions and intense heatwaves in others. In Famenin, Hamadan province, air quality reached a dangerous index of 500 due to dust storms, making it the most polluted area in the country. Other regions, including Asaluyeh and Pars 2 in Bushehr province and Meh in Fars province, also recorded unhealthy air quality levels exceeding 150, largely attributed to oil and gas industry activities.
Simultaneously, several Iranian cities ranked among the hottest in the world. Dehlaran recorded 47.8 degrees Celsius, placing it second on a global list of hottest locations, followed by Zabol at 47.5 degrees Celsius. Other high temperatures were noted in Khuzestan, Sistan and Baluchestan, and Kerman provinces. While air quality remained acceptable in parts of Tehran and northern Iran, the country continues to face significant challenges from both atmospheric pollution and extreme thermal stress.
