Iran faces fuel crisis amid US naval blockade and economic sanctions
Iran is facing a severe domestic fuel crisis, characterized by long queues at petrol stations and closures in Tehran, as a result of a US naval blockade and internal production shortfalls. Vice President Mohammad Jafar Ghaempanah stated that domestic output is insufficient to meet demand and that the maritime blockade is preventing necessary petrol imports. Officials have noted that the current subsidy system is inequitable, favoring multi-vehicle owners.
In response to the ongoing conflict, US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has introduced an economic asphyxiation plan targeting critical Iranian sectors, including digital assets, technology, gold, aviation, and maritime transport. President Donald Trump announced that US forces have removed or detonated all mines in the international waters of the Strait of Hormuz, warning that any new mines will be destroyed immediately.
Despite these pressures, Iran reports that it has restored approximately 40 percent of the production capacity at the South Pars oil and gas fields following previous attacks. While oil traffic through the Strait of Hormuz has dropped significantly to five million barrels per day, some Iranian officials claim that oil sales to customers outside territorial waters continue, though volumes have decreased.
