Iran faces intensifying gasoline shortage and fuel station closures

A worsening gasoline shortage is spreading across various Iranian provinces, including Tehran, Mazandaran, Gilan, Kerman, Hormozgan, and Fars. Reports indicate that several fuel stations have closed due to a lack of supply, forcing citizens to visit multiple locations and endure long queues. In some regions, strict rationing has been implemented, with reports of limits such as 10 liters per vehicle in Mazandaran and 15 liters in Bushehr.

The crisis coincides with ongoing maritime pressures affecting fuel imports and the government's efforts to implement significant fuel price increases. Mohammad Reza Aref, the First Vice President, has acknowledged that a ‘fourth rate’ for gasoline prices has been determined by the administration.

In response to the shortage, authorities have reportedly increased enforcement against older vehicles and motorcycles, impounding them to reduce overall fuel consumption. This measure has drawn criticism as high inflation and poverty prevent many citizens from replacing their aging vehicles. Meanwhile, judicial officials in Hormozgan have stated they are attempting to mitigate the crisis through legal orders.
