Iran faces leadership uncertainty and new academic restrictions

Iran faces significant political and social tension following reports regarding the status of Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and new legislative measures targeting academic freedom.

Speculation has emerged concerning the health or survival of Mojtaba Khamenei, who has not appeared publicly since his appointment in March. Historian Arash Azizi has raised questions about his status, noting a lack of recent footage or audio. These rumors follow reports of a potential injury sustained during an American bombing raid on his residence in February.

Simultaneously, the Iranian Parliament has approved a controversial bill titled ‘Combating the Influence of Foreign Intelligence Services, Governments, and Organizations’. The legislation aims to restrict research, art, and media by placing scholars and students under suspicion of espionage. Under the proposed law, any exchange with foreign organizations, particularly Western ones, would require government approval. Violations could result in prison sentences for organizers and fines for participants. The bill must still be ratified by the Parliament and the Guardian Council.
