Khamenei avoids electronic contact, remains unreachable

Entities: Mojtaba Khamenei · Iran · Masoud Pezeshkian · United States · United States

Overview

In late July, reports noted that the newly installed Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei had stopped using phones or computers for about three months, relying on a courier network whose messengers are unaware of the contents they carry. Former Mossad unit chief Rami Igra said human agents now constitute the primary means of locating the leader, while senior U.S. sources confirmed that Iran remains a hard environment for electronic intelligence.

By early August, President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated that contact with Khamenei remained “very difficult,” stressing that the leader’s guidance still arrives via written messages and occasional secret meetings, such as a reported encounter in a dark vehicle. He described the leader’s facial and leg injuries as superficial, but noted circulating rumors of more serious wounds and warned that hostile powers were trying to sow division amid the ongoing war with the United States and Israel.

On 5 August, Pezeshkian again told state television that communication with the Supreme Leader was “very difficult,” adding that Khamenei has made no public appearance since succeeding his father, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who was killed in a joint U.S.–Israeli airstrike on 28 February 2026 that also wounded the new leader. The president cited the 14‑point U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding signed on 17 June 2026, which Khamenei publicly endorsed, as evidence of the regime’s resolve to maintain national unity against external pressure. He further emphasized that the leader’s presence remains a major source of strength for Iran and portrayed Khamenei as an “exceptional” figure whose ethics and reasoning inspire confidence in the nation’s defence.
