Iran faces shortages of specialized and vital medicines

While the total number of essential drug shortages in Iran has decreased compared to previous years, specialized and vital medicines continue to face scarcity and accessibility issues. According to the Iran Food and Drug Administration, the number of essential drug shortages dropped from 341 items in 2022 to approximately 65 in recent months. However, more recent reports indicate that between 100 and 106 drugs are currently identified as having shortages or stocks lasting less than one month.

The shortage is particularly critical for patients with chronic or specific diseases who cannot easily substitute their medication. Significant concerns have been raised regarding products for hemophilia and thalassemia patients. Specifically, Factor XIII, a highly specialized coagulation factor, is facing a severe shortage, with warnings issued regarding the depletion of emergency reserves. Other products mentioned in relation to these shortages include Humit P and Fibrinogen.
