Iran faces UN call to halt executions of protest participants

The Independent International Fact‑Finding Mission in Geneva urged Iranian authorities to immediately stop the executions of 10 men detained for taking part in the January protests in Isfahan. The mission highlighted that two men were already executed on 19 July and warned that further executions appear imminent, noting a pattern of accelerated death‑penalty cases linked to the nationwide protests that began in December 2025.

Human‑rights groups report that Iran has intensified death sentences against protesters, with about 70 detainees at Isfahan’s Dastgerd Prison facing capital punishment. Among them are Mehnam Navab‑Safavi, sentenced for “moharebeh” and related offenses, and Ahad Shokouhian, whose death sentence was upheld by the Supreme Court despite contested evidence. The Iranian judiciary has executed at least 23 men related to the protests since March 2026, and more than 60 individuals have been sentenced to death in the same period.

The mission condemned the rapid processing of these cases and called on Iran to halt all executions tied to the protests and national‑security charges.
