Iran executes two men for January 2026 protest killings in Isfahan

Iran executed Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi on 28 July 2026 after they were sentenced to death for taking part in the killing of four security‑force members at Alikhani Square in Isfahan on 8 January 2026. They were among a group of twelve protesters sentenced in a single, closed‑door hearing; two other defendants had already been executed on 19 July 2026.

United Nations human‑rights experts said at least 24 people have been executed in connection with the January protests and that the group death sentences violate fair‑trial standards, a point raised by UN special‑rapporteur Mai Sato. Amnesty International reported that the Iranian authorities have arbitrarily arrested more than 6 000 people and handed 39 death sentences since the February attacks.

In response to the surge in executions, prisoners at the Ghezel Hesar prison near Tehran—about 1 500 death‑row inmates—started a mass hunger strike, sewing their lips shut to protest the executions. The UN Human Rights Council has called on Tehran to halt the pending executions.
