Iran Food and Drug Organization mandates pharmacy sales for herbal medicines

The Food and Drug Organization of Iran has clarified the regulatory distinction between medicinal plants and herbal medicines. Dr. Shahram Shoaybi, Director General of Natural, Traditional, Supplement, and Infant Formula Affairs, emphasized that herbal medicines and natural products must be distributed through pharmacies to ensure proper packaging and compliance with safety requirements.

While traditional herbalists (attari) may deal with medicinal plants, the sale of processed herbal medicines is restricted to pharmacies. This regulation extends to online sales; internet platforms may sell these products provided they are connected to a pharmacy and the products are supplied under the supervision of a technical manager.

Regarding domestic production, most natural products and supplements are manufactured by local companies. However, the industry faces challenges in securing raw materials, as rising global prices and logistical difficulties can impact production costs and product availability.
