Iran Food and Drug Organization regulatory updates

The Food and Drug Organization of Iran has addressed several regulatory and supply chain issues regarding medical and natural products.

Initially, the organization responded to concerns over medical glove shortages and food safety allegations. Spokesperson Mohammad Hashemi stated that the agency is working to stabilize the supply of medical gloves, noting that imports cover only 10% to 20% of the needs for certain types, while the organization prioritizes domestic production. Regarding food safety, Hashemi addressed social media claims about companies reusing expired dairy products, stating that while violations will be investigated, unverified videos lacking specific details are insufficient for formal confirmation.

Subsequently, the organization clarified regulations for herbal medicines. Dr. Shahram Shoaybi emphasized that while traditional herbalists may sell medicinal plants, processed herbal medicines and natural products must be distributed through pharmacies to ensure safety and proper packaging. This mandate includes online sales, which must be connected to a pharmacy and supervised by a technical manager. Additionally, the organization noted that while most supplements are produced locally, the industry faces challenges due to rising global raw material prices and logistical difficulties.
