Iran's Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi warns US over asset seizure and Hormuz corridor plan

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to President Donald Trump's claim that any damages to commercial vessels in the Gulf would be paid from Iranian assets held by the United States. Araghchi called the proposal an "incendiary precedent," warning that seizing another nation's assets to cover unrelated future claims would create chaos and would not be peaceful.

He also emphasized Iran’s role in the Strait of Hormuz, stating that under the recently signed agreement Iran will determine the navigation corridor and restore traffic to pre‑war levels within a month, keeping the waterway free of fees unlike other strategic passages such as the Suez Canal, Bosphorus or Panama Canal. Araghchi criticised the United States for threatening Iran and reiterated that any move to confiscate Iranian assets would destabilise regional security and economic stability.

The minister’s statements were issued after Trump announced the asset‑seizure policy on his Truth Social platform and followed recent Iranian drone attacks on U.S. bases in Bahrain and Jordan, underscoring heightened tensions between Tehran and Washington.
