Iran publicly hanged Abolfazl Sepahi Badjani and Amirhossein Safari Hosseinabadi on 28 July 2026 in Alikhani Square, Isfahan. The men were convicted of killing four security‑force members during the 8 January 2026 protests in the same square. Their executions were carried out before a crowd, despite a United Nations experts’ appeal hours earlier urging authorities to halt the hangings.

United Nations experts reported that at least 24 people have been executed for protest‑related offences in the first half of 2026, while Amnesty International warned that at least 60 other individuals—including three minors—remain at risk. Iran’s execution tally has risen sharply, with roughly 900 people put to death since the start of the year and 115 executions recorded in June alone. Two additional defendants, Erfan Esfandiari and Gol Mohammad Mohammadi, were executed on 19 July 2026.

Separately, more than 1,500 death‑row inmates at the Ghezel Hesar prison near Tehran began a mass hunger strike, with some sewing their lips shut, to protest the expanding use of capital punishment.
