Iran launches missile and drone attacks on Gulf states after US strikes, closing Strait of Hormuz

Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps fired missiles and drones at U.S. installations and civilian targets in the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain, Oman, Jordan and other Gulf locations following a series of U.S. airstrikes that hit about 140 Iranian military sites. The attacks prompted air‑defence systems in the Emirates, Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Jordan to intercept projectiles, trigger sirens and, in Qatar, injure three people including a child. No fatalities were reported in most of the strikes.

Iran also announced the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, the key maritime chokepoint that carries roughly one‑fifth of global oil and gas shipments, citing continued U.S. interference. The U.S. Central Command said its forces had struck more than 300 Iranian targets over three nights, aiming to degrade Iran’s missile, drone and naval capabilities.

The escalation threatens regional stability and global energy markets, jeopardising the interim U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding that was intended to keep the strait open and reduce hostilities. Diplomatic talks continue amid growing concerns over shipping safety and rising oil prices.
