Iran human rights reports document massive civilian casualties during protests

Reports from the United Nations and Iran Human Rights have detailed extensive human rights violations during recent nationwide anti-government protests in Iran. A UN fact-finding mission concluded that security forces engaged in a violent crackdown involving killings on a massive scale across all provinces. The mission reported that at least 221 children were killed and noted that security forces attacked healthcare facilities, targeting wounded protesters and medical staff.

The UN mission stated there are ‘reasonable grounds to believe’ that many of these violations, including murder, torture, and arbitrary detention, amount to crimes against humanity. Additionally, the mission raised concerns regarding summary trials and executions.

Separately, Iran Human Rights released a report identifying a verified minimum of more than 4,200 people killed during the protests, including at least 420 women and 281 victims under the age of 18. This figure exceeds the 3,117 deaths previously acknowledged by Iranian authorities. The report notes that the true death toll may be higher due to communication blackouts and limited access to forensic records.
