Iran-linked misinformation videos on Middle East attacks debunked

Two viral videos circulating on social media were found to be falsely presented as evidence of Iranian‑backed attacks in the Gulf region. The first video, shared on X and viewed millions of times, claimed that Iran targeted the Al‑Abdali border checkpoint in Kuwait, a site near the Iraqi frontier. CNN Arabic’s fact‑check revealed the footage actually shows an attack carried out by the Baloch Liberation Army against a Pakistani Coast Guard base in Gwadar, dated July 4, 2026. The second video, also posted on X and labeled as a Saudi F‑16 shot down by Yemen’s Houthi rebels, was traced to an Iranian embassy account in South Africa and originally posted on April 3, 2026. The clip unrelatedly depicted an older incident involving an American A‑10 aircraft over the Strait of Hormuz. Both videos were amplified amid heightened tensions, including recent Iranian warnings to U.S.-supported states and Saudi airstrikes on Houthi positions in Yemen. The misattributions illustrate how outdated or unrelated footage is repurposed to stoke regional conflict narratives.
