Middle East military conflict misinformation

Investigations have identified several instances of viral misinformation involving repurposed footage used to depict military conflicts in the Middle East.

In July 2026, two videos were debunked after being falsely presented as evidence of Iranian-backed attacks. One video claimed to show an attack on a Kuwaiti border checkpoint but was actually footage of a Baloch Liberation Army attack on a Pakistani base. A second video, shared by an Iranian embassy account, falsely claimed to show a Saudi F-16 being shot down by Houthi rebels; the footage actually depicted an older incident involving an American A-10 aircraft.

In August 2026, further misinformation was identified regarding Houthi activities in the Red Sea. Viral footage claiming to show a recent Houthi attack on a Saudi Arabian warship near Al-Mukha was found to be old footage from Houthi military maneuvers conducted in October 2024. While Houthi spokespeople claimed to have targeted a Saudi landing ship and escort vessels, the visual evidence provided was from previous military exercises.
