Iran offers to open Strait of Hormuz if U.S. lifts sanctions
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has stated that Tehran will open the Strait of Hormuz for shipping if the United States fulfills its commitments under a memorandum of understanding. Pezeshkian demanded that the U.S. lift sanctions, end the economic blockade, and release frozen Iranian assets. He also called for the cessation of Israeli attacks on Lebanon.
Simultaneously, U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced an intensified economic campaign against Iran. Bessent reported that the U.S. has moved 130 million barrels of oil through the Strait of Hormuz over the last two weeks, while claiming Iran has moved none. The U.S. is expanding secondary sanctions to include trading partners, targeting 60 individuals, entities, and vessels across five sectors: aviation, digital assets, gold, shipping, and technology.
The economic pressure is compounded by the United Arab Emirates severing trade and financial ties with Iran. U.S. officials suggest that Iran has lost significant control over the Strait of Hormuz, with the U.S. military now exercising effective control over much of the waterway.
