Iran Parliamentary Commission approves fees for Strait of Hormuz transit
The Iranian Parliament's National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has approved Article 3 of the 'Strategic Action Plan for Security and Development of the Strait of Hormuz'. This legislative step introduces a system of fees for vessels transiting the strategic waterway.
According to Hasan Kaşkavi, the commission spokesperson, these charges will be levied in exchange for various services provided by Iran. The scope of services includes maritime operations, environmental protection, fuel supply in special circumstances, insurance, and security services. The fees are intended to be collected in Iranian Rials or other currencies as determined by the Iranian government.
The proposed plan emphasizes that while Iran recognizes the freedom of navigation under international law, it also asserts the right to protect the security and sovereignty of coastal states. The legislation is currently moving through the Iranian parliamentary process, which requires further review by the General Assembly and the Guardian Council before it can be enacted into law.
