Iran permits Iraqi oil tankers to transit the Strait of Hormuz

Iran has granted special permits to Iraqi oil tankers to transit through the Strait of Hormuz, according to the official news agency Irna. This facilitation has occurred over the past six months following the onset of war in the Middle East.

Iran assumed control of the Strait after an Israeli-American attack in late February, which triggered the current conflict. In response, the United States has implemented a naval blockade on Iranian ports. Iraq, which relies on crude oil sales for nearly 90% of its revenue, has repeatedly requested access to the Strait as it remains the primary route for its exports.

Tehran has indicated that the status of the Strait will change permanently and expressed intentions to impose transit fees on vessels using the waterway. Additionally, Iran and Oman are currently in discussions to establish a new transit route within the passage. However, Iranian officials maintain that such agreements will not suffice to fully open the Strait unless the United States meets specific Iranian demands.
