Iran threatens to target undersea cables in the Persian Gulf
Iranian security officials have announced detailed plans to target undersea communication cables in the Persian Gulf and the Strait of Hormuz if military conflict with the United States and Israel resumes. According to senior officials, Tehran aims not only to damage the infrastructure but also to obstruct repair efforts to prolong communication disruptions.
Yadollah Javani, a deputy head of political affairs for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), stated that seven major internet cables beneath the Strait of Hormuz could be targeted if Iranian infrastructure is attacked. Officials warned that the scope of potential retaliation could expand to include military bases and data centers.
While undersea cables carry approximately 99% of global internet traffic, experts note that the global impact of such an attack might be limited because less than 1% of international bandwidth passes through the Strait of Hormuz. However, regional consequences could be severe, potentially disrupting internet connectivity, financial transactions, e-commerce, and cloud services for Gulf states and neighboring countries.
