Iran faces energy crisis and economic pressure amid ongoing conflict

Iran is facing a severe energy crisis as it prepares for winter, with officials warning of significant natural gas shortages. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf has called for a national mobilization to reduce gas consumption by at least 10%. To encourage conservation, the government has promised that citizens who save fuel will receive direct payments into their bank accounts.

The energy deficit is expected to reach between 100 and 250 million cubic meters per day during the winter months. This shortage has been exacerbated by damage to critical infrastructure, including gas refineries in southern Iran, following military strikes during the conflict with the United States and Israel that began in late February.

Economically, the country is under intense pressure. President Masoud Pezeshkian noted that many Iranians are struggling to afford food due to the economic consequences of the war. Additionally, a US naval blockade has reportedly prevented Iran from exporting at least $25 billion in crude oil over a 100-day period, further straining the national economy.
