Iran President Pezeshkian expresses distrust in U.S. negotiations
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian has expressed deep skepticism regarding negotiations with the United States, stating that Tehran no longer trusts Washington due to previous cycles of military attacks and economic sanctions. He emphasized that any renewed diplomatic efforts should be grounded in the memorandum of understanding reached in June.
Pezeshkian noted that Qatar and Pakistan are currently serving as intermediaries to facilitate the exchange of messages between Iran and the U.S. He also addressed the status of the Strait of Hormuz, characterizing its closure as a natural response to the blocking of Iranian routes, but suggested that the waterway could reopen for commercial shipping if hostilities are resolved through dialogue.
Regarding regional security, the President described the Mecca Defense Agreement—signed by Saudi Arabia, Turkey, and Pakistan—as a positive step toward Islamic unity rather than a threat to Iran. He argued that regional stability should be managed by neighboring nations through cooperation, rejecting the need for an external “regional police.” Additionally, Pezeshkian denied that Iran is pursuing nuclear weapons, citing religious and legal prohibitions.
