Iran prison campaign protests death penalty
The ‘No to Execution Tuesdays’ campaign has entered its 143rd consecutive week, with prisoners in 66 facilities across Iran participating in strikes and protests against the death penalty.
Activists report that 2,230 people have been executed in Iran over the past twelve months, including 54 women, 47 political prisoners, and four minors. The campaign highlights several specific cases, including the death sentences of 23-year-old student Amirhossein Akbari Monfared and 19-year-old Ali Zakani. Additionally, the movement noted the recent upholding of a death sentence for political prisoner Varisheh Moradi.
The campaign calls for concrete international action to halt executions, noting that recent arrests have been followed by deaths in custody. The movement has received support from United Nations special rapporteurs regarding freedom of expression and the right to peaceful assembly.
