Iran prison hunger strike protests surge in executions

In its 129th week, the “No To Executions Tuesdays” campaign involved political prisoners in 58 Iranian prisons who began a hunger strike on July 14. The protesters demanded an end to the execution of non‑political inmates on death row at Ghezel Hesar prison and warned against the growing number of death sentences for political detainees.

Since Masoud Pezeshkian became Iran’s appointed president, executions have risen to at least 3,888, including the recent hanging of a 52‑year‑old woman at Adel Abad prison. More than 100 political prisoners are currently under death sentences, and twelve individuals were listed in the “Alikhani Square” case, some of whom were minors at the time of their arrests. On July 12, guards at Evin prison cracked down on female political prisoners protesting overcrowding, and prisoners in Unit 2 of Ghezel Hesar began a hunger strike after six inmates were transferred to solitary confinement for execution.
