Iran reflects on Mahsa Amini and the 'Woman, Life, Freedom' movement
Four years after the death of Mahsa Amini, the movement sparked by her detention and death for perceived hijab noncompliance continues to shape Iranian society. While some observers note a gradual shift in social norms, such as women increasingly choosing not to wear the mandatory veil in major cities, the state maintains a repressive stance.
Political prisoners in 62 prisons have launched a hunger strike to protest death sentences. The “No to Execution Tuesdays” campaign has entered its 138th week, calling for international intervention to halt executions. Activists and protesters, including men who suffered injuries during the 2022 demonstrations, continue to advocate for equality and freedom.
In response to ongoing unrest, Judiciary chief Gholam-Hossein Mohsen Ejei has warned that the state's response to future protests will be more decisive than in previous periods. Meanwhile, the names of nearly 700 protesters killed during the 2022 uprising have been published as part of the ongoing commemoration of the movement.
