Iran proposes seven-day plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has proposed a seven-day plan to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, contingent on the United States meeting specific conditions. According to the proposal, the strait would reopen on the sixth day if conditions are met, with formal negotiations commencing on the seventh day.

Tehran’s requirements for the deal include the lifting of US oil sanctions, the removal of port blockades, the unfreezing of Iranian assets abroad, and an end to regional hostilities. While the US has acknowledged the proposal, negotiations remain complicated by Washington’s demand that Iran halt its nuclear program.

The maritime corridor is of critical global importance, previously handling approximately 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas trade. The current instability has contributed to high global oil prices.

In a separate development, the Iranian Parliament confirmed Mehrdad Akhlaqi Ketabchi as the new Defense Minister. Ketabchi, who has experience in aerospace and missile technology, aims to restore defense industrial infrastructure. Meanwhile, Iranian officials have warned of a military response to potential US or Israeli aggression, stating they have prepared plans described as more devastating than previous conflicts.
