Iran proposes seven-day plan to reopen Strait of Hormuz
Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi announced that the United States has accepted the terms of Iran’s “seven-day plan,” though Washington has requested the addition of several new clauses. The initiative aims to provide a framework for reopening the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran closed in response to recent military actions. Under the proposed plan, the strait would be fully reopened on the sixth day, provided that the United States fulfills its previous obligations.
Araghchi stated that diplomatic contacts between Tehran and Washington are ongoing. He emphasized that the reopening of the waterway is conditional upon the U.S. meeting its commitments, including lifting the blockade, easing oil restrictions, and releasing frozen assets. He also denied any connection between Tehran and the ongoing tensions in the Red Sea.
Reports suggest that Iran may be prolonging these negotiations to weaken the political standing of U.S. President Donald Trump ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. Some Iranian officials believe that providing immediate concessions would offer a political victory to the Trump administration, leading Tehran to delay a final agreement while preparing for potential future confrontations.
