Iran: Protester sentenced to death and another released

Two individuals detained during the January 2026 protests in Iran face different legal outcomes. Sepehr Amirzadeh, a musician and teacher held in Isfahan's Nastardgan prison, has been sentenced to death by a Revolutionary Court on charges of ‘moharebeh’ (enmity against God). His case is currently under review by the Supreme Court.

Meanwhile, Majid Samarqandi has been released from prison after serving 194 days of a sentence related to the same protests. Following a three-year sentence—two of which were suspended—Samarqandi is required to serve the remainder of his term under electronic monitoring within a 1,000-meter radius of his residence.
