Iran protests: Thousands killed in violent crackdown on economic unrest

In January 2026, Iran experienced widespread protests driven by severe economic hardship. The demonstrations were met with violent suppression by security forces, including the Ministry of Intelligence, the Basij militia, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).

While Iranian authorities reported over 3,100 deaths, human rights organizations suggest the toll is significantly higher. Amnesty International noted that internet blackouts and pressure on families obscured the true scale of the violence, while Human Rights Activists in Iran (HRANA) has recorded more than 7,000 deaths.

Survivors face long-term physical disabilities and economic hardship. Due to fear of retaliation and inadequate medical resources, many injured individuals were forced to seek treatment at home or in overcrowded facilities. A United Nations report from March 2026 indicated that at least 56 people have been executed on national security charges related to the unrest.
