Iran reaches shipping understanding while approving new Strait of Hormuz transit penalties

Iran has announced that an understanding has been reached regarding a safe shipping route through the Strait of Hormuz, involving agreements with neighboring coastal countries. This development follows ongoing negotiations over the strategic waterway, which has been a point of contention between Iran and Oman. While the strait remains under Iranian control, the announcement suggests a potential de-escalation of tensions.

Simultaneously, Iran’s National Security and Foreign Policy Commission has approved new, strict penalties for vessels that violate transit regulations in the Strait of Hormuz. As part of the “Strategic Action to Ensure Security and Development of the Strait of Hormuz” bill, authorities will have the power to confiscate 20 per cent of a violating vessel’s cargo or its financial equivalent. Offending ships may also be temporarily impounded by Iranian maritime forces until fines are settled. To enforce these rules, the judiciary is mandated to establish specialized court branches staffed by experts in maritime and international law.
