Iran receives U.S. response on Strait of Hormuz reopening proposal

Diplomatic efforts to resolve the seven-month conflict between the United States and Iran have entered a new phase. Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has received a formal response from Washington via Qatari mediators regarding Tehran’s proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz. The proposal includes a seven-day trust-building plan aimed at restoring maritime traffic, contingent upon the United States lifting the blockade on Iranian ports, easing oil sanctions, and releasing frozen assets.

While negotiations continue, significant friction remains. The primary disagreement reportedly concerns the sequencing of steps and implementation guarantees. U.S. President Donald Trump has previously rejected the initial proposal, denying reports that he offered sanctions relief or access to frozen funds in exchange for nuclear program concessions. Conversely, Iranian officials maintain that their conditions for reopening the Strait are clear.

Amidst these diplomatic maneuvers, tensions remain high. Iranian government spokesperson Fatemeh Mohayerani stated that the country is in a state of war and all scenarios remain possible. Additionally, Iran has increased readiness across dozens of vital facilities, including oil refineries, power plants, and airports, in anticipation of potential infrastructure attacks. The stability of the Strait of Hormuz continues to impact global energy markets, with oil prices remaining sensitive to the ongoing deadlock.
