Overview
A coalition of 80 nations, led by Bahrain, has issued an urgent call at the United Nations for the immediate and full reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, demanding safe and unimpeded passage for all commercial vessels. The group condemned Iranian actions in the Strait and Houthi militia attacks in the Red Sea and Yemen.
In response, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi proposed a seven-day roadmap to the United States via Qatari mediators to de-escalate regional tensions. The plan requires the United States to lift its naval blockade on Iranian ports, waive oil-related sanctions, and release at least $12 billion in frozen Iranian assets. If these conditions are met, the implementation process would take four to five days, with the Strait of Hormuz reopening on the sixth day and formal nuclear negotiations potentially commencing on the seventh. President Masoud Pezeshkian noted the proposal was coordinated with Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei and that a six-member task force has been formed to manage the process. The proposal also seeks a regional ceasefire that includes Lebanon and Yemen.
U.S. President Donald Trump has rejected the proposal, labeling it ‘unacceptable’ and asserting that the United States maintains ‘total control’ over the Strait of Hormuz. Speaking at the White House, Trump described the offer as ‘unacceptable,’ claiming Iran is seeking an agreement because they are ‘currently losing ground.’ He asserted that the U.S. military blockade has depleted Iran’s financial resources and noted that Iran’s previous intentions to close the Strait would have caused global economic distress. While the White House has acknowledged ‘positive and constructive’ indirect talks, Washington has indicated no immediate intention to end the maritime blockade.
