IAEA confirms Syria's undeclared nuclear reactor and uranium stockpiles
The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has concluded that the former Syrian government under Bashar al-Assad failed to declare several nuclear facilities and activities, violating its safeguards agreement with the Non-Proliferation Treaty. Following the removal of the Assad regime, new Syrian authorities granted inspectors access to suspected sites.
In Deir ez-Zor, inspectors discovered cooling infrastructure consistent with a nuclear reactor. The investigation also identified a fuel fabrication facility and locations used for nuclear fuel and waste storage. Additionally, the IAEA secured 73 metric tons of natural uranium metal, which includes 55 metric tons of fuel rods.
Separately, the IAEA reported ongoing difficulties in verifying Iran's nuclear program. Inspectors currently lack access to more than 20 sites, and the agency remains unable to confirm whether Iran has suspended uranium enrichment or reprocessing activities. There are concerns regarding approximately 440 kilograms of nearly weapons-grade uranium for which information has not been provided.
