Overview

The standoff between Iran and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has intensified as the agency warns of significant proliferation risks. Recent IAEA reporting indicates that, with the exception of the Bushehr power plant, no verification activities have been performed at any declared sites since February. The agency has lost the ability to track declared nuclear inventories at facilities targeted in military strikes, noting that satellite imagery shows damage to the heavy water facility in Khandab following an attack on March 27. Furthermore, the IAEA observed regular vehicle activity at a tunnel entrance in Isfahan used to store 60 percent enriched uranium, though the agency remains uncertain regarding the exact location and legal status of the Isfahan fuel enrichment facilities. Prior to the strikes, the IAEA reported that Iran possessed approximately 440.9 kilograms of uranium enriched to 60 percent purity. In Syria, following the removal of the Assad regime, new authorities granted inspectors access to suspected sites. The IAEA concluded that the former government operated an undeclared nuclear program in violation of its safeguards agreement. In Deir ez-Zor, inspectors discovered cooling infrastructure consistent with a nuclear reactor, a fuel fabrication facility, and locations for nuclear fuel and waste storage.
