Iran Rejects US Claim Unfrozen Funds Will Purchase American Agricultural Products

Iran’s chief negotiator, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, publicly denied that the country’s recently unfrozen assets will be used to buy U.S. wheat, soybeans or corn. In a post on X, Ghalibaf called the American allegation a “false claim” and said the only crop Iran is harvesting is the mistrust that the U.S. has sown.

U.S. President Donald Trump and Treasury officials have asserted that a portion of the unfrozen funds will be earmarked for American agricultural products, promising that no cash will be sent directly to Tehran and that the distribution will be monitored from Qatar. The statement follows the June 17 interim U.S.–Iran memorandum of understanding, which makes the frozen assets available to Iran once the agreement’s conditions are met. The dispute highlights broader tensions over the deal, including disagreements about Iran’s right to collect tolls in the Strait of Hormuz and accusations of regional interference.
