Iran reports at least 72 executions in August

Human rights organizations have reported a significant number of executions and heavy prison sentences in Iran. According to the Iran Human Rights Club, at least 72 prisoners, including three women, were executed in August. Among those executed were five individuals detained during the 2025 nationwide protests and one individual who was under the age of 18 at the time of the alleged crime.

Reports indicate that Dashtgard Prison in Isfahan recorded the highest number of executions with at least eight cases, followed by Qezel Hesar Prison in Karaj with six. Other locations including Urmia, Zanjan, Ardabil, and Shiraz also reported multiple executions. The report noted that two of the executed individuals faced espionage charges, and the group included several Baluch and Kurdish prisoners.

In addition to executions, human rights sources highlighted ongoing judicial pressures, including heavy sentences for protesters. Notable cases include Hadis Morvaridi, sentenced to three years for an Instagram post, and Hamed Qasri, a researcher sentenced to over six years for activities deemed against national security. Reports also mention instances of prisoner mistreatment and lack of access to legal counsel or family contact for those detained during recent unrest.
