Iran reports surge in executions and political imprisonment

Human rights organizations have reported a significant escalation in executions and crackdowns on dissent in Iran during August 2026.

According to HRANA, 78 people were executed during the month, including five women. Charges included murder, drug-related offenses, and security-related crimes. Notably, two individuals, Ghaem Hosseini and Shahram Sadeghi, were hanged in connection with the January 2026 protests. The report also noted a sharp increase in prison sentences for expressing opinions, with 80 citizens receiving a combined total of over 7,238 months of imprisonment.

Iran Human Rights Monitor (Iran HRM) documented a higher figure of 92 executions, emphasizing that 85 of these were carried out secretly without official state announcement. The monitor reported that the victims included women, juvenile offenders, and ethnic minorities. The report further detailed an intensification of crackdowns on political prisoners through violent prison raids, enforced disappearances, and the denial of medical care.
